Advantages of Superalloy Casting
High-temperature Performance: Superalloys maintain their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, making them ideal for applications involving extreme heat. This characteristic is crucial for components in gas turbines, jet engines, and other high-temperature environments.
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Superalloys exhibit exceptional resistance to oxidation and corrosion, even in harsh chemical environments. This makes them suitable for use in chemical processing plants, marine applications, and oil and gas extraction equipment.
Enhanced Mechanical Strength: The inherent strength of superalloys allows them to withstand significant mechanical stresses without deforming or failing. This is particularly beneficial in aerospace, automotive, and industrial applications where durability and reliability are paramount.
Fatigue And Creep Resistance: Superalloys possess excellent resistance to fatigue and creep, ensuring long service life under cyclic loading and high-stress conditions. This property is essential for components that experience repeated thermal cycles and mechanical loads.
Versatility In Design: Casting superalloys enables the production of complex geometries and intricate designs that might be challenging or impossible to achieve with other manufacturing methods. This flexibility is advantageous for creating custom components tailored to specific applications.
Tailored Alloy Compositions: Superalloy compositions can be customized to meet specific performance requirements. By adjusting the alloying elements, properties such as hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance can be optimized for particular applications.

Properties of Superalloy Casting
|
Element |
Composition range |
Purpose |
|
Ni, Fe, Co |
50-70% |
These elements form the base matrix γ phase of the superalloy. Ni is necessary because it also forms γ' (Ni3Al). |
|
Cr |
5-20% |
Cr is necessary for oxidation and corrosion resistance; it forms a protective oxide Cr2O3. |
|
Al |
0.5-6% |
Al is the main γ' former. It also forms a protective oxide Al2O3, which provides oxidation resistance at higher temperature than Cr2O3. |
|
Ti |
1-4% |
Ti forms γ'. |
|
C |
0.05-0.2% |
MC and M23C6 (M = metal) carbides are the strengthening phase in the absence of γ'. |
|
B,Zr |
0-0.1% |
Boron and zirconium provide strength to grain boundaries. This is not essential in single-crystal turbine blades, because there are no grain boundaries. |
|
Nb |
0-5% |
Nb can form γ'', a strengthening phase at lower (below 700 °C) temperatures. |
|
Re, W, Hf, Mo, Ta |
1-10% |
Refractory metals, added in small amounts for solid solution strengthening (and carbide formation). They are heavy, but have extremely high melting points. |

Types of Superalloy Casting
Cobalt-Based Superalloys: A cobalt superalloy contains 50–60% cobalt mixed with 20–30% chromium and 5–10% tungsten. Cobalt alloys have a high fatigue life and higher strength than iron- and nickel-based superalloys in high-temperature applications. Due to their high corrosion resistance, they form some of the parts of a gas turbine that are exposed to the atmosphere.
Titanium-Based Superalloys: Titanium-based superalloys use titanium mixed with roughly 11% molybdenum which reduces the elastic modulus of the superalloy. A titanium-based superalloy’s unique property is its high hardness. Titanium-based superalloys find many applications in the aerospace and biomedical industry.
Niobium-Based Superalloys: Niobium-based superalloys are often made of niobium and nickel. Niobium-based superalloys have relatively low strength when compared to other nickel-based base alloys.
Method for Treating Superalloy Casting
A method for treating investment cast superalloy castings wherein the portions of the castings which solidify directly against the mold walls comprise a substantially continuous or encapsulating skin of a metallic and/or nonmetallic composition. In such castings, defects in the form of material voids, including defects present immediately beneath the skin, are eliminated by the application of heat and pressure. The castings are heated to temperatures sufficient to achieve metal movement in the form of yield or creep, and a pressure of at least about 10,000 psi is applied by means of a surrounding gaseous atmosphere.
The heat and pressure application deforms the material in the area of the voids and consolidates this material to substantially remove the voids and to thereby improve the performance characteristics of the castings. The encapsulating skin also serves as a protective coating during the hot isostatic pressing whereby contamination of the casting by elements such as oxygen or nitrogen in the furnace atmosphere is avoided, or drastically reduced. By eliminating surface defects and avoiding surface contamination, the investment castings are cast to substantially exact final dimensions since finishing operations are minimized.
